The Bank of England is looking to build a 30-person team to develop a central bank digital currency (CBDC), The Sunday Times reported. The source of the figures was not disclosed.
In February, the Bank of England and the UK Treasury began further research and development of a “digital pound” and solicited public input on the plan. The project has been referred to as “Britcoin” in reports, but the Bank of England has not mentioned the name, saying it has not yet decided whether the digital pound will use blockchain technology.
The Bank of England’s careers page lists job openings for Digital Pound Security Architect and Digital Pound Solutions Architect. Both were published late last month. The salary is 80,000 pounds (about 99,000 dollars, about 13 million yen). The UK Treasury is looking for a head of the central bank’s digital currency department in January.
“A team of 30 would be a pretty big resource to focus on the digital pound,” said Ian Taylor of trade group CryptoUK, according to the paper. It shows how serious the bank is,” he said.
