The Arbitrum network experienced a “partial outage” on the 15th due to a spike in transaction traffic that affected the layer 2 blockchain sequencer.
According to multiple posts on Arbitrum’s social media on Monday, Arbitrum’s sequencers went down “amid a significant spike in network traffic.” “We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and will provide a post-mortem as soon as possible,” a post on Arbitrum’s status webpage said.
Sequencers can be likened to “air traffic control” for determining which transactions arrive first at a Layer 2 network such as Arbitrum. These are important links between Layer 2 and its base chain, Ethereum. But it’s also a single point of failure.
The outage caused confusion in the Arbitrum community. An AMA (Ask Me Anything: Q&A session on social media, etc.) that was scheduled to take place in the X (formerly Twitter) space at 12pm ET was abruptly canceled by an Arbitrum employee shortly after it started. Arbitrum’s Discord was flooded with messages from traders fearing what would happen to their positions when the network came back online.
Arbitrum’s sequencer was most recently shut down in June after a bug caused a backlog of unprocessed transactions. This issue was fixed within a few hours.
The issue did not cause a stir in the market for Arbitrum’s ARB token, which had already fallen slightly on the day.
